Annual Report - August 2006 - March 2007

The Tuesday Club has outgrown itself!  Therefore, we now have the Tuesday and Wednesday Club.  By opening our doors on Wednesday, we have reduced the overcrowding.  The activities on Wednesdays, which include bingo, raffles and refreshments, are basically the same.  However, Wednesdays have additional attractions, including genelogy (by appointment), a library (including audio recordings of many favourites) and a selection of board games.  The Tuesday and Wednesday club committee are very pleased that numbers have balanced out.

Also proving to be very popular are the seasonal outings to places of interest, shows, dances and trips abroad. We organised a varied programme of events since our last Report [31st July]:

9 August: Southend – Traditional seaside trip
6 September: Hunstanton – Traditional seaside trip
15 September: 5th Anniversary of the Tuesday Club, attended by 100 members of the Birmingham Tuesday Club, and hosted by St Joseph’s Parish Centre.  A finger buffet was provided, together with live music by ‘Logic’
4 October - Salisbury - Visit to cathedral and heritage centre
18 October - Older Person’s Day Social evening at the Royal Hotel
13-19 November: Blackpool - Turkey and Tinsel Break
13 December: Christmas Party attended by 150 LIF members, and hosted by The Holy Ghost Parish Centre.  A carvery was provided, together with DJ music from Jane Laurel.
28 December: Pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk” hosted by the Library Theatre
24 January:  visit from the Golden Shamrock Club from Nottingham.

In 2007, our first trip will be to Clacton on 7th June, followed by Clifton Ville on 5th July.  We will visit Southwold on 9th August, Oxford on 6th September, and finally; Worchester on 4th October.

This May, 50 members will visit Portugal for a fortnight.  Thanks, in advance, to Nancy Galvin and Breege [Bridget] Cruise for planning every detail.  In April, we will play host to the Derby Irish Society Elders Group, with a party at the Holy Ghost Parish Centre.

The Tuesday and Wednesday Clubs would not run so smoothly, without the volunteers who put in so much time each week.  Pat Leonard organises most of the activities, whilst Lilly Leonard, Joan Vine, Betty Ryan and Ann Boyle attend in the kitchen.  Phyllis Daly and Eileen Cronin collect the bingo and raffle money and Ann Mead, Mick Pender, Nancy Galvin call the bingo.  Thanks are also due to Tony Murphy, Teresa Mitchell and our Librarians; Liam Green and Breda Houghton.  If I have missed anyone out; my apologies!  Last, but not least, we are very grateful to the ladies who took part in the ‘Knit and Natter’ which raised £525 for HFT; an organisation supporting people with learning disabilities.  This was quite an achievement, as it was the most money raised by all the groups that took part.

That’s about all folks for another year!
