Annual Report - August 2006 - March 2007

Keep Fit

Over the past 8 months our Keep Fit classes have continued to grow in popularity. These classes, which were set up with a Sport Relief grant from the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation, have attracted 208 attendees in this period.  The exercise is specially designed for the over 50’s, and not only does it improve health, it has proved to be a great way of making new friends.  Anyone is welcome to the classes which are held every Thursday from 10.30am till 11.30am.

We have now secured a second grant from sports relief to set up line dancing classes which will begin in June. The classes will be an hour long and no previous experience will be necessary; just a willingness to learn. These will also be open to anyone but places will be limited.  As we expect the class to be very popular it will be necessary to book a place in advance.

Computer Classes

Unfortunately Barnfield College informed us that they would no longer be able to run computer classes at our centre due to cuts in funding.  As the classes were very popular, and an important part of our educational programme; we looked into running our own classes.  We had previously secured funding from the Ireland Fund of Great Britain for tutor costs, and in September we secured funding from the Kathleen and Michael Connolly Foundation to purchase 10 laptops.  We ran 4 taster sessions in December to which 28 people came along.  After Christmas, we ran 3 six week courses, 2 on internet and email and 1 on word processing.  29 people attended these courses. We will be running 2 more classes of internet and email starting on the 16th June.  Places on these courses will be very limited but anyone who has put their name on the waiting list for this course will be contacted and offered a place. We hope to offer future classes in Internet and Email, Digital Imaging (editing pictures from your digital camera), word processing (writing letters etc), using spreadsheets (to set up databases and collate data) and desk top publishing (to create posters, leaflets and tickets).  If you are interested in brushing up you skills, add your name to the list.
