Monaghan Mans Early Retirement in Luton

1960 - Contributed by Peadar Mc Kenna

I was born in Monaghan, brought up in the townland of Bryanlitter, Clontibret, County Monaghan, Eire. I left Ireland when I was sixteen, forty three years ago. During that time I lived in Richmond, Surrey, Cricklewood London NW2, St. Margaret's, Twickenham Middlesex and Luton. I took early retirement on 28th Feb 03, i.e. this year from IBC Vehicles. I also ceased to be a member of the Conservative Party on the 1st Nov 03 this year on the Appointment of Mr Michael Howard QC. MP as party leader.

Life is great in retirement, I get great pleasure being a Member of the Monaghan Association Beds & Herts which is based at St.Josephs, Gardenia Ave, Luton. I attend their monthly meetings on the First Wednesday of every month. I am their PRO. I believe there is still a role for Irish people involvement in Irish County Associations especially they provide a social outlet for all generations of Irish people.

I am also looking forward for the first time in joining Vauxhall Pensioners Association on trip to Germany at end of the month, i.e. end of Nov 03. I have been to Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Belguim with my partner in September 03. Luton Irish Forum, which I am member, offers opportunities for people to enhance their social life also to learn new skills and meet new friends. The message I am trying to convey in this story, there is no need for retired people to be lonely, it can present new opportunities to enter new exciting ventures.
